W.C. Handy (seated right) returns to Memphis to jam with friends. (James L. Dickerson)

Ironically, after the success of Handy’s “blues” songs, the musicians in the Delta who had been playing folk music applied Handy’s structure to the new songs that they wrote. In other words, Robert Johnson, Son House, Charlie Patton, and all the others, borrowed from Handy, and not the other way around. They did so for a very good reason: Because Handy’s blues appealed to everyone, black and white, it was profitable to perform at social gatherings. Handy’s contribution to music was the essence of the Mojo Triangle, and the father of everything that followed.
